Brussels Airlines, the national carrier of Belgium and part of the Lufthansa Group, has started the new year by becoming the first airline to receive a delivery of Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel™ at Brussels Airport via NATO's Central European Pipeline System (CEPS). The CEPS supplies fuel to commercial airports across Central Europe and from 1 January 2023, these airports will also be able to purchase Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) through the pipeline system.

Brussels Airlines has set itself ambitious sustainability targets. Among other things, the airline aims to reduce its CO2 emissions by 50 per cent by 2030 compared to 2019, become carbon neutral by 2050 and fly with SAF for the first time by 2023. With the delivery of Neste SAF via the CEPS pipeline, Brussels Airlines is one step closer to its sustainability goals and will be able to operate a first flight with SAF as early as the beginning of 2023.

"In order to achieve our climate goals, we must drastically increase the use of alternatives to fossil fuels in the coming years. Within the Lufthansa Group, we have already been investing in the production and use of SAF for several years. The fact that we can now get sustainable jet fuel delivered quickly and in an environmentally friendly way from the blending plant directly to our aircraft is an important step on the way to greater use of this fuel in the near future," says Peter Gerber, CEO of Brussels Airlines.

"Sustainable jet fuel is the most effective solution right now when it comes to reducing emissions from air travel. Neste is working together with partners such as Brussels Airlines and the Lufthansa Group, with airports and with logistics service providers to make SAF available throughout Europe and globally. Following NATO's approval to transport SAF via the CEPS pipeline system from 1 January 2023, we are proud to be the first to deliver SAF via pipeline to Brussels Airport. We look forward to supplying more airports via Europe's largest pipeline system in the near future. Pipelines are the most efficient delivery route for Neste as we expand our SAF production capacity 15-fold in 2023," said Jonathan Wood, Vice President Europe, Renewable Aviation at Neste.

The first batch of Neste's SAF for Brussels Airlines was pumped directly into the pipeline system on 1 January as a ready-to-use fuel blend with conventional paraffin from Neste's blending facility in Ghent, Belgium. From there, the fuel was transported by Brussels Airlines via the pipeline to the general fuel depot at Brussels Airport, so that SAF for Brussels Airlines is ready for withdrawal.
