The Internet of Things (IoT) is revolutionizing the way municipalities can sustainably and efficiently use and offer their infrastructure and public services. Using three example applications, L4IT Systems, the European subsidiary of one of the leading IoT solution providers, demonstrates the potential of IoT.

Parking Management
The effective use of parking spaces is a challenge in all urban areas that will be significantly improved in the future through the use of IoT technology. Intelligent management systems use sensors installed in parking spaces to monitor the availability of parking spaces in real-time. These data are not only transmitted to a central platform to optimize traffic flow and reduce unnecessary CO2 emissions, but also to present further correlations between parking space usage and, for example, sales promotions, potential bottlenecks, etc. for decision-makers in dashboards.
Light Control
Another example of an application of IoT is intelligent light control. By using sensors and networked lights, lighting in public spaces such as parks, streets, and squares can be automatically adjusted to the environment and frequency of use. The lighting can be controlled in real-time and individually depending on the parameterization to save energy and increase safety.
Waste Management
IoT will play a decisive role in municipal waste management as well as in industrial waste disposal in the future. The waste management of the future will involve much more individualized tour and landfill optimization than today. The basis will be "intelligent" waste bins equipped with sensors that automatically monitor their fill level and propose an optimal tour plan depending on the available fleet, transport and landfill capacity. This way, municipalities and waste disposal companies can plan more efficiently and avoid empty runs. This also allows waste bins that are unexpectedly full to be emptied promptly, avoiding odors and litter caused by waste lying around.
