New Sustainable Product: Altos Planos (USA) is the winner with Mijenta tequila. Made from sustainably produced agave, it is the world’s first carbon neutral and B Corp certified tequila. Mijenta uses agave waste to make its labels and note cards, and works with social enterprises in Mexico.

Albert Heijn (Netherlands) is runner-up with the AH Overblijvers (remainers) range; consumers can buy products reaching their expiry date via a mobile app.

Sustainable Ingredient: The Seaweed Company (Netherlands) is winner with SeaMeat®: a plant-based ingredient that can be added to processed meats like burgers, sausages and meat balls. The ingredient is a blend of several seaweeds that are grown according to organic production methods.

There are two runner-ups: Australian Family Farms with its sustainable malt, and ofi (Singapore) with cascara powder.

Sustainable Packaging: Supaso (Austria) is the winner with its thermal packaging. The company uses an upcycling process to convert discarded paper into packaging that can replace styrofoam in temperature and damage-sensitive goods.

Traditional Medicinals (USA) is runner-up with its compostable tea bag overwraps.

Sustainability Pioneer: Fairtrade Originals (Netherlands) gets top prize. The social enterprise has been promoting fair trade practices since its formation in 1959. It has set up numerous ethical sourcing projects to source fair trade foods and ingredients.

Minerva Foods (Brazil) is runner-up for its traceability programme for cattle.

Sustainability Leadership: Ecotone (France) is the winner. One of the leading organic food companies in Europe, its purpose is ‘foods for biodiversity’. Ecotone has invested in various initiatives, including carbon management, CSR, biodiversity, and sustainable packaging. It has one of the highest rankings for a B Corp worldwide.

Nature Bio Foods (India) is runner-up for the various ways it is addressing its impacts.

The 2023 Sustainable Food Awards reception was hosted at the Mövenpick Hotel Amsterdam City Centre on 15th June. The event was co-hosted alongside the European edition of the Sustainable Foods Summit, 15-16th June.
