Enabling the hydrogen economy

Yara is producing and using around 7 % of Europe’s hydrogen today in their production of ammonia. As the world’s largest ammonia provider, Yara Clean Ammonia aims to kickstart the hydrogen economy by enabling the clean ammonia value chain and driving the green transition of global shipping, power, fertiliser, and energy-intensive industries. Ammonia does not emit CO2 when burned and could be the next-generation fuel. Liquid ammonia does not require cooling to extreme temperatures and has a higher energy density than liquid hydrogen, making it more efficient to transport and store. Yara operates the largest global ammonia network with 15 ships, 18 terminals and multiple production units worldwide. They are establishing production and partnerships globally to scale the uptake of clean ammonia in decarbonising the hard-to-abate industries.

Clean air to breathe thanks to AdBlue® by Yara

Every year Yara’s DeNOx solutions clean more than 1,600,000 tons of dangerous NOx emissions globally, about 1/3 of EU’s total NOx emissions. In the transport sector, AdBlue is essential. Over 31 million vehicles in Europe require AdBlue, allowing them to run without emitting dangerous NOx from their exhausts. Without AdBlue, they would not run, and Europe’s transport sector would be on its knees. Yara’s world-scale ammonia and AdBlue plant in Brunsbüttel, Germany, is central to keeping the wheels turning, and for kick-starting the hydrogen economy in Germany. Brunsbüttel’s and Rostock’s ammonia terminals are being modified to handle up to 3 million tons of clean ammonia. Carrying 530,000 tons of hydrogen, these strategically located plants will be key for ramping up Germany’s green shift and for emission-free shipping worldwide.
