The automation specialists from Pilz are supporting the modernisation of the railways with a safe and modular rail control system: PSSrail is intended to be the pioneer for digital rail - safe, modular and digitally controllable.

With PSSrail, the automation company Pilz is presenting a safe and modular railway control system for digital rail. The system has railway approval, fulfils safety requirements up to SIL-4, is compatible with the EULYNX standard and has a modular design, making it flexible to use. The clever character of PSSrail lies in the combination of these functions: the system is designed to combine all functions to fulfil existing or future control tasks on the track. According to Pilz, PSSrail enables system providers and integrators to implement digitalisation projects in the field of signalling technology and railway infrastructure simply, quickly and therefore economically.
Modular principle for customised configurations

The modular design of the safe and modular PSSrail railway control system consists of the actual SIL 4-compliant control system and various hardware modules, including a CAN module for easy integration of existing systems. PSSrail also has a software suite for programming or configuring user programmes. Rail-certified function blocks are stored in a programme library and enable simple and fast implementation. Thanks to the modular principle, users can customise their solutions as required.
Economical thanks to standardisation and openness

Pilz relies on standardisation and openness with PSSrail. The control system is compatible with the latest EULYNX standard, paving the way for the implementation of digitalisation projects. Pilz has developed the railway control system as a COTS product (Commercial Off The Shelf). This should provide users with a ready-to-use product and minimise their obsolescence management.
Pioneer for digital rail

System providers and integrators can use PSSrail for a wide range of signalling applications, including electrically operated points or level crossings as well as in digital interlockings. For example, PSSrail can be used as an object controller platform to digitally - and therefore reliably and economically - control the components in the field along the railway. PSSrail provides a control solution that can also be used to digitise during operation and upgrade to the EULYNX standard, for example. Operators can gradually modernise outdated, relay-controlled interlockings and increase the reliability and performance of rail transport. Thanks to standardisation and openness, the conversion time is shortened, which means considerable cost savings.
New standards in the digitalisation of rail infrastructure

"With the safe and modular PSSrail rail control system, we are setting new standards in the digitalisation of rail infrastructure," explains Sebastian Lüke, Head of Business Unit Rail at Pilz. "With PSSrail, system providers and integrators now have a tool with which they can implement the necessary digitalisation of rail economically and flexibly."
