The Sustainable Foods Summit will discuss the implications of the Ukrainian conflict on food security and sustainability issues. The European edition returns to Amsterdam on 7-8th July 2022.

Rising food & energy prices, growing food insecurity, and protectionist measures are raising interest in sustainable production methods. As agrochemical prices rise, what solutions are provided by organic farming? As global trade in agricultural commodities slows, how can regional / local food production be encouraged? As production costs rise, how can food producers improve efficiency and reduce wastage? What new technologies can increase sustainable food production? How is consumer demand for sustainable & organic foods affected by recent events? What is the pricing outlook for organic ingredients & plant-based proteins? Such questions will be addressed at the summit.
Amarjit Sahota, Founder of Ecovia Intelligence, will give some projections on the sustainable & organic food market. Global sales of organic foods have approached USD 130 billion, however there are questions about the future growth trajectory. How is organic food supply and demand expected to change in 2022 and beyond? What is the growth outlook? A leading organic food retailer (Ecoveritas) and trader (EOSTA) will give their insights.
Ling Sin Fai Lam, Sustainability and ESG Director at Shore Capital, will discuss the impact of geopolitics on agricultural supply chains and food security. Rising food prices has led Indonesia (palm oil) and India (wheat) to halt exports, whilst Russia is limiting wheat and sunflower oil exports. These protectionist measures are slowing global trade in agricultural products, increasing food insecurity and bringing conflict risks. Ling will also discuss the impacts of climate change on food supply chains.
Industry experts will discuss the role of new technologies in increasing food supply. James Lloyd-Jones, Founder of Jones Food Company, will discuss the opportunities provided by vertical farming. His UK company operates the largest vertical farm in Europe, growing 1,200 tonnes of fresh herbs, salads, fruits & vegetables each year. Another speaker will show how cultured meats can help meet the protein needs of the
global population. Christian Poppe from the German company Formo will highlight the use of cellular agriculture; Formo is creating animal-free dairy products by fermentation techniques.
Upcycled ingredients are gaining popularity as the food industry looks to improve efficiency and reduce waste. There is increasing R&D and new products are made from ingredients originating from food side streams. Iveta Kovacova from Ecovia Intelligence will present new research on the upcycled food market. Anian Schrieber from the Swiss start-up Koa will give details of its upcycling projects. It is working with 10,000 cocoa smallholders in Ghana to repurpose cocoa pulp and make new products. Koa is using blockchain technology to provide transparency in its supply chains.
