Leading environmental compliance specialists, Ecoveritas will attend the 12th National Plant Show later this month.

The two-day event, organised by the Horticulture Trade Association, will see over 140 exhibitors gather at NAEC Stoneleigh from Tuesday, 20 to Wednesday, 21 June.

Alongside the UK horticulture sector showcasing everything from seeds, bulbs, houseplants, garden plants, labelling, product information, growing media, display benching and machinery, Ecoveritas will talk about Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR).

EPR is a policy approach shifting the cost of managing a product's packaging when disposed of at the end of its lifecycle from local authorities to producers. With most obligated businesses collecting packaging data since 1 January and firms with a fee-paying obligation due to begin reporting next month, the demand for resources, or more specifically, expertise, is rising.

EPR will impact the garden products business and potentially drive significant costs through increased administration and levies, not to mention the possibility of fines for non-compliance.

Sandy Dhesi, Commercial Manager at Ecoveritas, said: "Packaging design and formats, sustainable materials, labelling requirements, recycled content and recyclability, and EPR fees are only some of the high priorities for the businesses on our platform.

"With EPR affecting retailers, nurseries, manufacturers and suppliers differently, we'll be looking to demonstrate how we can help businesses understand their obligations. And there are several moving parts to keep across.

"Our goal is for all our customers to have a crystal-clear view of the circularity performance of their packaging and its entire packaging supply chain, informing decisions about which designs best meet shifting objectives.

"From working out how your business is obligated and packaging weights and materials to collating detailed records and analysis of moving to more sustainable materials and formats, there are proactive steps that can be taken to minimise the costs under EPR.

"The HTA has always acknowledged that the industry is intrinsically and positively linked to the environment and has a key part to play in minimising the impact of packaging. Sustainable packaging starts with accurate data, and we want to demonstrate how our tools and expertise can make a big difference."
