3M is investing $165 million to improve water quality and reduce water use at its manufacturing facility in Cottage Grove, Minnesota. The investment follows an August 2021 announcement of a companywide collaborative effort to partner with Clean Harbors for waste management, which eliminated the need for 3M’s incinerator to process waste in Cottage Grove. The company has since fully transitioned its waste management at the site, and as a result of discontinuing incinerator operations, reduced its on-site energy use by 25 percent.

Collo’s new online measuring technology can detect nearly any change in liquid properties straight from the process in real-time. The novel technology has the potential to revolutionize liquid quality control, since it enables continuous process monitoring and is universally suitable for all fluids, from thin to thick.

3M has reached a collaborative agreement to resolve ongoing litigation and negotiations related to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) near 3M's Decatur, Ala. facility with parties including The City of Decatur and Morgan County, the plaintiffs in St. John, and the Tennessee Riverkeeper organization.
