Portugal has a good international reputation in the energy sector. The Partner Country at this year's HANNOVER MESSE will be presenting 13 innovative Portuguese companies with advanced technological solutions in the field of renewable energy.
From 30 May to 2 June at HANNOVER MESSE 2022, companies from the Partner Country Portugal will be showcasing their technological solutions for the generation of clean energy and demonstrating Portugal's extensive expertise and experience in the field of renewable energy to the global market. In Europe, Portugal is one of the countries with the highest share of green energy.
In December 2021, Portugal became the fourth country in Europe to abandon coal in electricity generation. The country has consistently reduced fossil fuel-based energy consumption by using state-of-the-art technologies to diversify renewable resources for power generation. The benefits include more efficient use of resources, more sustainable mobility and greater security of supply.
Portugal's geographical location is favourable for all renewable energies, creating opportunities and competitive advantages for the export of goods and services in this sector. Renewable energy currently accounts for around 1.6 per cent of Portugal's GDP and has created more than 45 000 jobs in recent years.
Portugal ranks ninth in global contribution to Planet & Climate in the Good Countries Index and has committed to be CO2 neutral by 2050. Portugal has built the first-ever floating solar project on an existing hydroelectric plant and developed the first floating offshore wind farm in continental Europe: the Windfloat Atlantic. In December 2020, Portugal achieved 111 hours of national energy consumption without conventional thermal electricity generation.
In the European Union, Portugal is a leader in energy transition. Its national green hydrogen strategy is an exemplary commitment to renewable energy: it promotes the gradual integration of hydrogen into different sectors to enable a decarbonised economy. The strategy also aims to create a hub for the export of green hydrogen for Europe, which is crucial to foster global growth in the sector.
Several Portuguese companies offer urban mobility solutions for smart cities, including the production of hydrogen for storage in chargers and the operation of hydrogen-powered buses.
"Portugal was the fifth country in the European Union with the largest share of energy from renewable sources in 2020. In 2021, 60 per cent of electricity consumption in Portugal was generated by renewable resources. Portugal is a great country to invest in, with a clean environment and sustainable solutions," said Luís Castro Henriques, Chairman and CEO of AICEP - Portuguese Trade and Investment Agency.
The Portugal Energy Solutions Pavilion in Hall 13 at HANNOVER MESSE 2022 will showcase 13 Portuguese companies: ENERGEST, Fusion-Fuel, ISQ, PRF, Zembe, Cleanwatts, EDP Renewables, EFACEC, Enermeter, Galp, Indisol, REN and STREAMVALUE.
