For almost 100 years, Viipurilainen Kotileipomo has been producing baked goods and breads using traditional craftsmanship and regional ingredients. When the bakery was looking for a new solution for their pastry boxes, they were essentially looking for a reduction in the environmental footprint as well as a quick and simple box design.

Together, Viipurilainen Kotileipomo and Metsä Board's packaging design team at Metsä Board's Excellence Centre developed a resource-efficient and 100 per cent recyclable biscuit box. The attractive new packaging saves 25 per cent of material compared to the previous model and reduces CO2 emissions by 34 per cent. At the same time, the bakery reduces its plastic consumption by dispensing with PE-coated cardboard. In addition to the ecological benefits, the new pastry box also offers faster and easier construction.

&bdquoPackaging sustainability is important to both us and our customers. We are happy to set an example for the environment - by using less plastic and recycling more. The whole product development process at the Excellence Centre was well structured and the new, stylish packaging was quickly used in the shop," explains Teppo Ylä-Hemmilä, who works in bread art and as innovation manager at Viipurilainen Kotileipomo.

&bdquoThe new concept is an excellent example of how collaborative brainstorming enables innovative solutions. When developing the packaging in our Excellence Centre, we visualised the material, structure and sustainability features quickly and accurately using a virtual model," explains Ilkka Harju, Packaging Services Director, EMEA and APAC, Metsä Board. The company is a leading European producer of premium virgin fibre board.

The biscuit packaging is made from the lightweight MetsäBoard Prime FBB EB grade, a dispersion-coated barrier board that can be recycled via paper or board disposal. MetsäBoard Prime FBB EB is stable and fat-resistant - important properties for foods such as cakes and pastries, which usually have a high fat content.
