Wien Energie and Actility today announced a strategic partnership to deploy a LoRaWAN® network in Vienna. This significant initiative falls in line with Vienna’s digital strategy, aiming to position Vienna as the most livable and smartest city in the world. The project leans into the city’s commitment to human digitalization, ensuring the technology supports its residents rather than displacing them.

“Wien Energie is a utility provider that understands the need for strong, reliable partnerships. In Actility, we have found a dynamic ally who not only provides connectivity for Vienna but can also help us deal with any challenges. With their expertise, we are equipped to implement and manage sustainable IoT use cases that directly benefit our city”, states Paul Prinz-Wallner, Product Owner IoT, Business Development Telecommunications at Wien Energie.

Actility, renowned for its advanced IoT solutions, provides its flagship ThingPark Wireless platform for the project. A preferred choice for service providers rolling out LPWAN connectivity services, ThingPark Wireless powers most large-scale, nationwide IoT network deployments across the globe. The platform is appreciated for its security, carrier-grade availability, scalability, multi-radio support and adherence to the latest specifications of the LoRa Alliance, ensuring seamless interconnection with other public and private networks.

Through this cooperation, Wien Energie would like to make a significant contribution to the digitization initiative in the city of Vienna to facilitate processes. Wiener Netze, a sister company of Wien Energie, is entrusted with building the outdoor network in Vienna, while Wien Energie focuses on indoor solutions. The network is currently undergoing a testing process, with implementation of highly scalable use cases and projects expected to begin in early 2024.

This partnership represents a significant stride towards Wien Energie’s commitment to climate protection. Through deploying LPWAN technologies, the company significantly reduces its energy requirements. Furthermore, it aligns with their ambition to achieve net carbon zero by 2040.

The close cooperation of Wien Energie and Actility encapsulates a vision for a smarter and more sustainable future, setting Vienna on the path to becoming the world’s smartest city.
