The Sustainable Foods Summit returns to São Paulo on 29-30th November. The 6th Latin American edition will showcase sustainability innovations in the regional food industry, placing emphasis on plant-based foods.

For the first time, the summit will discuss the opportunities for plant-based foods in retailers and foodservice outlets. Plant-based alternatives to meat and dairy products are taking off in Latin America as the sector receives high investment. Raquel Casselli from the Good Food Institute will give an update on the Latin American market for plant-based foods, highlighting key developments and trends. Thayana Oliveira, Food Policy Manager at Humane Society International, will discuss the openings in foodservice & catering establishments. The organization recently launched the Educating for Sustainability program in which it will bring over 10 million plant-based meals to schools in the Salvador municipality.
An update will also be given on the growing range of proteins that can be used in plant-based foods. Initially, most meat and dairy alternatives were using soya beans and grains like wheat (seitan) and oats. NotCo will show how it is using artificial intelligence to create novel plant proteins. The Chilean food-tech company is disrupting the plant-based food market with its Not Milk and Not Burger products. First launched in Chile, it has expanded distribution to Brazil, Argentina, and the US. Other speakers will discuss precision fermentation to create proteins, and the emergence of cultured ingredients.
Food retailers, foodservice & delivery firms will share their sustainability experiences. Lucio Vicente, Head of Corporate Affairs & Sustainability at Carrefour, will explain how the supermarket chain is addressing its impacts. Carrefour was recently ranked 53rd in Merco’s 100 most sustainable corporations. Gustavo Vitti, Chief People and Sustainability Officer at iFood will discuss the sustainability issues associated with food delivery. iFood, Brazil’s largest food delivery firm, has committed to generate zero plastic pollution and become carbon neutral by 2025. The company is developing a recycling facility in São Paulo and is moving its couriers to electric bicycles.
Industry experts will also discuss future trends. Felipe Villela of ReNature will discuss the prospects for regenerative agriculture in Latin America. He will discuss the challenges when scaling up regenerative agriculture projects. Futamura will highlight the use of biopolymers in food & beverage packaging. Other speakers will cover vertical farming, cultured meats, upcycled foods, and blockchain technology.
